This rant has been building all week.
But before I start: am I the only one who has thought that Princess Diana, wherever she is now, had something to do with the exact timing of the Pope's death? Personally I don't think it was a conspiracy with God on her side, I like to think she snuck into the old guy's bedroom, making herself invisible to the attending whoevers, and went "BOO!!" at the right moment to cause the final passing of the old fella. Nice one girlfriend.
Anyway, quite a few media columnists and so forth have already eloquently expressed their distaste with the mass media saturation with the Pope's death (particularly mind bending given that only 8% of the British population are Catholic). But it's really bugging me so I have to add my voice to the chorus. I mean, would we be having all this incredibly hypocritical reverence and respect from all sides if George W. Bush had died? Personally, I would feel like dancing in the streets, except for the fact that I know another one just like him (or worse) is gonna pop up in his place (and by just like him, I include the fact that it will absolutely, irrefutably, be another man) as they have for 100s of years.
The man was not only head of a Church which claims he is infallible (!) but seems to exist for the sole purpose of increasing its own worldly power (like all corporations I guess), and to that end, controlling and suppressing the population, with a heavy emphasis on oppressing women, and repressing the erotic and sexuality in general. To me, this is pure evil. Soul destroying and death-mongering. Many people who know more than me have already talked about the millions of deaths from AIDS, the orphaning of children etc. thanks to this Pope's insistence on no condom use; this is the repugnant end of a very bad spectrum of actions from a Church whose whole philosophy dovetails so nicely with the woman-hating of the rising right.
Where is this "love" that everyone talks about? He was so full of "love"; such a "loving" father to his flock. What a fucked up, cracked, dysfunctional family, 1984 bunch of doubletalk! And all those people mourning him- that scared me- young people too. Why? Why?
And watching all those men in their scarlet cloaks... man after man after man after man. How dare they? It makes me want to dig out those old radical feminist Mary Daly books I used to love so much for a good old intellectual high colonic.
What really gets under my skin is when they try to focus on the "good" stuff he did, reconciling the Catholic Church with all those other patriarchal world religions like Judaism and Islam.
Sorry, folks, but I don't really want all the patriarchal religions realising that under their skins they are aligned in purpose and that they might be better off ganging up on the queers and the feminists to suppress and destroy us.
